WHO AM I?

Welcome to Lora Libby Music Studios! I taught my first piano lesson when I was still in high school, and caught the teaching bug soon thereafter. 15 years later, I enjoy running a vibrant private voice and piano studio made up of students from a wide range of abilities and experience levels.

MISSION STATEMENT

My studio mission statement reflects my commitment to my life’s calling:

Helping students learn the technical skills of their instrument, which enables and equips them to build a solid foundation for freedom in musical expression.

I aim to meet my students wherever they are, and encourage them to never stop being curious as they gain enthusiasm and appreciation for their instruments.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My teaching style is centered around the idea that curiosity is a catalyst for learning and growth. I use interactive questions to help each student discover and learn at their own pace, according to their individual needs and preferred learning styles (kinesthetic, visual, aural, verbal, etc). Neurodivergent students (ADHD, dyslexia, ASD, etc.) are some of my favorite students to work with, due to their unique gifting and creative ability.

I also enjoy helping students prepare to audition for upcoming musicals, summer music programs, local performing arts high school and middle school programs - or even just an open mic or karaoke night. In the past several years, my students have been accepted to a number performing arts programs both in and outside of the Bay Area, including:

  • Ithaca College School of Music

  • University of Illinois at Chicago School of Theatre and Music

  • Loyola Marymount University

  • Musical Theatre Program at Ruth Asawa School of the Arts

  • American Conservatory Theater’s Young Conservatory Cabaret Program

  • Broadway Artists Alliance in NYC

  • San Francisco Opera Guild Summer Conservatory

  • San Francisco Conservatory of Music Summer Vocal Academy

  • Musical Theatre Works, Young Performer’s Theatre, Westlake School for the Performing Arts

  • Pocket Opera

CREDENTIALS

I hold a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in addition to a Bachelor of Music degree from the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music (IL). While at SFCM, I was a recipient of the Dean B. McNealy Scholarship, and I’ve also been a finalist in both classical and musical theater divisions at multiple state and regional singing competitions. I am an active member of the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the National Association of Teachers of singing, where I am also on the Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

While teaching takes up much of my time, I still find the time to perform. Some favorite opera roles include Papagena (Die Zauberflöte), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), the title role in Cavalli’s La Calisto, Despina (Così fan tutte), Lucia (The Rape of Lucretia), and Amy March (Little Women). Musical theater is also a passion of mine, with roles including Hodel (Fiddler on the Roof) Olive Ostrovsky (25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), and Clara (Light in the Piazza). I’m also an avid performer of new/experimental music, and you can often find me collaborating with composers and artists across multiple disciplines and genres - check out the media section of this site for more.
